Como coordinador internacional de la peregrinación “De Océano a Océano”, llegué al santuario de Varese un día antes de la llegada prevista del Icono de Nuestra Señora de Czestochowa, que viaja por el mundo en esta misión. Quería ayudar a los organizadores locales a recibir y dar la bienvenida a la Virgen, y contarles cómo había sido acogida en otros países.
Me reuní con Vittoria Criscolo -coordinadora de los movimientos provida en Italia y, al mismo tiempo, una excelente traductora (ya que no hablo italiano)- y con Mons. Eros Monti, responsable del Santuario del Sacro Monte en Varese. Fue una conversación muy fructífera. ¡Todo estaba listo!
En la noche, hora de Ecuador (medianoche para nosotros), el padre León Juchniewicz, custodio del Icono en Sudamérica, debía tomar un vuelo rumbo a Milán, escoltando el Icono de Czestochowa. A la tarde siguiente, en el aeropuerto de Milán, debían recibirla los “Alpinos” -soldados del Regimiento Alpino (Reggimento Alpini)-, a quienes el padre Monti había solicitado encargarse del transporte del Icono hasta el Santuario, ubicado en el Parque Campo dei Fiori, que literalmente significa “Campo de Flores”.
Este lugar está compuesto por la Vía Sacra, el Santuario y un pequeño pueblo medieval que rodea el santuario. La Vía Sacra, con sus 14 capillas, asciende hasta el pueblito de Santa María del Monte y culmina en el Santuario, que es la última capilla, dedicada a la Virgen. Se encuentra a 807 metros sobre el nivel del mar. La subida es de 2 kilómetros por un sendero empedrado, y cada capilla representa uno de los misterios del rosario. Es un lugar encantador, catalogado como Patrimonio Mundial por la UNESCO. Se puede llegar por un camino muy sinuoso o haciendo una peregrinación a pie.
¡Pero resultó que hubo problemas! El 29 de mayo a las 11:23 p.m., el padre León me llamó desde el aeropuerto de Guayaquil, Ecuador, para decirme que había surgido un problema grave: KLM no quería permitir el embarque del Icono de la Virgen en el avión, como siempre se había hecho en viajes anteriores. La situación fue muy estresante. Se intentó convencer a la aerolínea en múltiples ocasiones, pero lamentablemente el avión despegó sin el Icono de Nuestra Señora y sin el padre León, quien tuvo que quedarse con Ella.
A las 12:31 a.m., informé a Mons. Monti sobre lo sucedido. Él, a su vez, avisó a los demás. Todos estaban muy nerviosos por esta complicación inesperada. Por supuesto, no se podía cancelar todo. ¡Quienes deseaban encontrarse con la Virgen de Czestochowa ya estaban en camino! Decidido, el padre Monti colocó en el lugar reservado para el Icono una copia en formato A3, la misma que yo le había entregado el día anterior.
Así que el domingo asistimos a una solemne misa presidida por Mons. Monti, y la homilía estuvo a cargo del padre Francesco Giordano, director de la oficina romana de Vida Humana Internacional, profesor en la Universidad Angelicum y en la Universidad Católica de América.
Después de la misa, nos reunimos en uno de los salones para peregrinos. Como era la hora del almuerzo, todos compartieron lo que tenían. Al principio, el padre Francesco desapareció, pero luego regresó con una bolsa llena de sándwiches. Tras el ágape, el padre Francesco ofreció una charla que tomó la forma de un diálogo. La audiencia mostró un gran interés. Luego me pidieron que explicara cómo “leer” el Icono de Czestochowa. Hablé en inglés, y el padre Francesco y Vittoria Criscolo tradujeron alternativamente. Realmente hubo mucho interés.
Me sentí un poco triste al enterarme de que una pareja había recorrido toda la Vía Sacra en peregrinación hacia la Virgen de Jasna Góra con una intención especial por su familia, para pedir su intercesión. Les aseguré que ¡Ella siempre escucha! Como recuerdo de este encuentro, podían llevarse una foto con una oración y una imagen en formato A5 del Icono de Czestochowa, que estaban disponibles en el santuario.
El padre León voló finalmente a Milán el lunes, pero el Icono llegó al Santuario de Varese mucho más tarde —aunque eso se cuenta en otro informe.

As the international coordinator of the pilgrimage “From Ocean to Ocean” I arrived to the sanctuary in Varese, a day before the planned arrival of the Icon of Our Lady of Częstochowa, traveling through the world “From Ocean to Ocean”. I wanted to help the local organizers in receiving and welcoming Our Lady and tell them how Our Lady of Częstochowa was received in other countries.
I met with Vittoria Criscolo – who was the coordinator for the Italian pro-life movements and at the same time a great translator (I don’t know Italian) and with Mons. Eros Monti, responsible for the Sanctuary of the Sacro Monte in Varese. This conversation was very fruitful. Everything was ready!
In the evening Ecuadorian time, and for us at midnight Fr. Leon Juchniewicz, the custodian of the Icon in South America, was to leave by plane for Milan, escorting the Częstochowa Icon. The next afternoon at the airport in Milan, the “Alpins” were to meet Her – soldiers from the Alpine Regiment (reggimento alpini), whom Father Monti had asked to organize the transport of the Icon of Our Lady to the Sanctuary located in the Campo dei Fiori Park, which literally means “Field of Flowers”.
It consists of the Holy Road and the Sanctuary, as well as the small medieval village that surrounds the Sanctuary. The Holy Road with its 14 chapels rises up to the small village of Santa Maria del Monte and ends at the Sanctuary, which is the last chapel - dedicated to Our Lady. It is located 807 meters above sea level. The rise is 2 kilometers along cobblestone path, and each chapel represents one of the Mysteries of the Rosary. It is a charming place, listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. You can get there by a very winding road or go on a pilgrimage on foot.
However, it turned out that there were problems! On May 29 at 11:23 PM, Fr. Leon called me from the airport in Guayaquil, Ecuador, saying he had a serious problem because KLM did not want to take the Icon of Our Lady on board the plane, as it always was on previous trips. The situation was very stressful. Many attempts were made to convince the carrier, but unfortunately the plane took off without the Icon of Our Lady and without Fr. Leon, who in this situation had to stay with Her.
31 minutes after midnight, I informed Mons. Monti what had happened. He in turn informed the others. Everyone was very nervous about the unexpected complication. Of course, not everything could be canceled. Those who wanted to meet Our Lady of Częstochowa were already on their way! Determined, Fr. Monti placed a copy of the Icon in A3 format in the place where She was to be placed in the Sanctuary. The same one I gave him the day before.
So on Sunday we attended a solemn Mass presided over by Mons. Monti, and the homily was given by Fr. Francesco Giordano – director of the Roman office of Human Life International, lecturer at the Angelicum and the Catholic University of America.
After the Mass we gathered in one of the halls for pilgrims. Since it was lunch time, everyone shared whatever they had. Fr. Francesco disappeared at first, but then he returned with a bag full of sandwiches. After this agape, Fr. Francesco gave a lecture, which took the form of a dialogue. The audience showed great interest. Then I was asked to explain how to “read” the Częstochowa Icon. I spoke in English, and Fr. Francesco and Vittoria Criscolo translated alternately. There really was a lot of interest.
I was a little sad when I learned that one of the couples had walked the entire route on pilgrimage to Our Lady of Jasna Góra with a special family intention to ask for Her intercession. I assured them that She always hears! As a memento of this meeting, they could take a picture with a prayer and an A5 image of the Częstochowa Icon, which were available in the sanctuary.
Fr. Leon flew to Milan finally on Monday, but the Icon reached the Sanctuary in Varese much later, but you can read about that in a separate report.
